CST 361S - Week 5

Week 5

I have worked about 23 hours on my service learning project so far. I am hoping to gain access to the website soon to begin teh data input needed for my project. It is difficult to get a hold of the web host, so this week was spent organizing some more and helping out around the museum.

Video Response

There is a real issue with diversity in software development and IT. There is a sort of "playing dumb" that people in the industry seem to not want to address, stating that the hiring pipeline they are choosing applicants from is not diverse enough. However, if that was the case, the next question to consider is why are otherwise qualified applicants passing on applying to these positions? I think there is a very clear culture clash in the tech industry that, for some, is a harder barrier of entry than it is to learn the trade. Even before you start, the work does not seem interesting if you know you are going to be in a company where you are not made to feel comfortable, appreciate, or even welcome. Tech culture as a whole seems very insular and if you are not someone who fits thier template, will not hesitate to leave you behind.
